New Covent Garden Market received top honours as Best Wholesale Market in the UK at the recent Great British Market Awards in Birmingham.

Presented by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA), New Covent was selected for its “rich history, support of independent businesses, and enviromental best practices.”

“This is fantastic recognition for everyone at our market in what is a particularly momentous year. CGTA has been celebrating its 100th anniversary and we’ll also be holding a dinner/dance in November to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the relocation of our great market from Covent Garden to Nine Elms,” Gary Marshall, Chairman of the Covent Garden Tenants Association (CGTA), said.

Meanwhile, Borough Market was given the Outstanding Achievement Award for favourite food market. NABMA said more there were more than 40,000 online votes cast in the competition in the category.

“The public vote for Britain’s Favourite Market has chosen a market known locally as a unique food & drink and shopping destination that offers a vibrant and eclectic fusion of the hand crafted and the hard to find,” NAMBA officials wrote. “The market is part of part of the history of its town and as a new town vision is being debated it is clearly regarded as part its future. The market has respected leadership, is not frightened of change and continually seeks to evolve and provide exciting business and start up opportunities.”
