Dubbed “zilla eggs”, the 70g (2.5 oz) avocados are sold in boxes for extra protection, have a delicate skin and fit with the growing trend for snacking on healthy alternatives, according to Tesco.
In contrast, the average avocado weighs around 200 grams (7oz), while the supersize Avozilla comes in at 1.7kg (3lbs, 7oz).
Positioned as snack for children’s lunchboxes as well as “superfood” choice for healthy shoppers, the mini avocados retail for £2 for an egg-style box of six and will only be available while limited stocks last.
Tesco says that if the trial is successful, more minis will be on the way.
“These Zilla Eggs are a brilliant way to offer customers great tasting, high quality avocados, which previously would have been rejected by growers because of their size,” says Tesco avocado buyer James Cantoni.
“They are perfect for customers who want to snack, without the usual fuss or worry of wasting the other half of the avocado. And it also helps producers who are able to sell even more of their avocado crop.”
The diminutive eggs are of the same high quality as their larger counterparts and avocado demand at Tesco has increased 30 percent in the last year.
