Discount retailer Aldi is charging ahead with plans to create an additional 1,200 new jobs while opening a store per week through the end of 2020.
Despite challenges brought on by Covid-19, Aldi is well on its way to its goal of having 1,200 markets across the UK by 2025. Included in its plans for the future will be locations in Sandhurst, Bristol and Edinburgh.
Aldi says each new locations brings with it 30 new jobs. Those additional positions include managers, caretakers/cleaners and store apprentices.
“As much as the disruption of the past few months has been challenging, it has also reminded us that there are still hundreds of towns across the UK where shoppers don’t have access to Aldi’s products and unbeatable prices,” Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer of Aldi UK, said.
Aldi currently has more than 34,000 employees stretched across the UK, with its colleagues earning what it says is an “industry-leading minimum hourly rate of £9.40 nationally, and £10.90 inside the M25. This increases to £10.41 after three years nationally and £11.15 after two years in London.”
Hurley says he understands the role his team members are playing during the crisis and knows it will take many more of them to serve new locations coming on board.
“I’ve been very proud of the tireless work my colleagues have put into feeding the nation,” Hurley says. “To continue doing this and meet our goals of making Aldi accessible to even more shoppers, we will need thousands more amazing colleagues across the country.”
