Chef’s Choice potato from Fresh Direct is ‘perfect ingredient’ for foodservice

Produce Business wire report

UK fresh produce provider Fresh Direct has launched a premium Chef’s Choice potato, which it says sets a “new benchmark for chipping and roasting potato.”

Through a partnership with Linwood Crops and following extensive trials, Fresh Direct and Linwood say they have figured out the exact specification for the very best tasting potato. Chef’s choice was tested by fresh Direct’s Chef panel, led by Head of Food Development, Ian Nottage,

“Potatoes, and in particular chips, are one of the chef’s key ingredients and are incredibly important in any service,” Nottage said. “Consumers remember great chips and our Chef’s Choice potatoes are the perfect ingredient for great chips. We’ve put these potatoes through their paces in a sustained and extensive testing regime and the results have been phenomenal. We believe that we’ve created something that’s really going to make a huge difference to chefs.”

So what’s different? They say their quality and consistency comes post-harvest, with strict store conditioning management and regular on-farm testing. Linwood selects the best of the best from that crop and only from chosen growers located across the UK.

The potatoes then go through further checks on arrival at the packing plant. Each batch is reviewed for exacting starch and sugar levels, dry matter content; and “most importantly, a sample from every load is cooked to ensure that they are ready to create the perfect chipping and roasting potato.”

The potatoes are available year-round and come in a 20kg recyclable bag.
