Spanish police have released images of how they discovered 57 pieces of fake fruit containing cocaine hidden amongst a consignment of real bananas.

During operations in Malaga and Valencia, the Guardia Civil (Spanish Civil Guard) smashed open the artificial bananas that were concealed in boxes to find seven kilos of the Class A drug.

Another ten kilos of cocaine was also discovered hidden in the cardboard flaps of the boxes.

Two Spanish men, aged 37 and 57, and an Italian man, aged 56, have now been arrested in connection with drug trafficking.

The operation was carried out by the Organised Crime and Anti Drug Team of the Civil Guard as well as the Customs Surveillance Service of the Tax Agency and dates back to last November when the fake cocaine-packed bananas were found in the consignment from South America.
