Independent retailers from Nisa shops have been donating their time and generating much-needed funding to local charities during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

With many charities and other good causes face significantly reduced income, Nisa's stores have donated almost £65,000 through the company's Making a Difference Locally campaign to ensure those most vulnerable are supported during the coronavirus outbreak.

“In such unprecedented times, we’re delighted that our independent retailers are supporting their local communities in any way they can, from offering home deliveries to providing much-needed financial support via MADL donations," said Kate Carroll, Nisa’s Head of Charity.

Nearly 200 donations have been made by Nisa partners across the UK and Ireland over the past three weeks. Those gifts will help serve food banks, community action groups and community radio stations and care banks. Workers are also keeping communities supplied with grocery and household essentials.

The MADL campagin raises funds in Nisa partner stores from sales of all Heritage and Co-op own-label products, a percentage of which goes into a virtual fund for retailers to donate. Additional funds can also be raised via in-store collecting tins. Stores are then able to donate funds raised to a local charity or good cause of their choice within a 10 mile radius, ensuring money raised will benefit the local community.

“Charities exist to help the most vulnerable people in our communities, yet they are facing a significant loss of income as a result of the coronavirus outbreak; Nisa retailers have really upped their community support during these times with much more to follow," Carroll said. "It’s really heart-warming to see local businesses giving back to local causes and funding some essential community support in such challenging times.”

Making a Difference Locally has been proudly supporting good causes since 2008 and has made more than 12,000 donations totalling over £9.2 million to date. There are more than 2,300 stores participating in the Making a Difference Locally initiative.
